On Wednesday, three people were injured in a wrong-way crash on North Broad Street. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the driver of a white Hyundai Kona was traveling south in the northbound lanes when he ran a red light and struck a white Toyota Camry traveling eastbound on Wallace Street. Both vehicles suffered significant damage, police said.
An 11-year-old passenger in the Toyota suffered multiple injuries and was transported to St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in critical condition. The Hyundai driver was transported to Temple University Hospital and is also listed in critical condition. The Toyota driver, the child’s father, declined medical treatment, while another passenger in the same vehicle was also taken to the hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Wrong-way crashes are especially dangerous because they often lead to head-on or high-impact collisions. In Pennsylvania, driving the wrong way is considered a serious traffic violation that can result in reckless or careless driving charges when resulting in accidents and injuries.
Broad Street is one of Philadelphia’s busiest and most dangerous roads. When a driver travels in the wrong direction, the risk of accidents with severe injuries or fatalities becomes extremely high.
